On a surprisingly warmish, unpredictable Melbourne afternoon, 15 aspiring chefs were treated to a master class in Greek gastronomy by the most talented MasterChef never to appear on commercial TV, Kon Karapanagiotidis.

After instiling some liquid confidence in our amateur cooks with drinks courtesy of our sponsor St Arnou, the big-hearted Kon fired up the burners and began to transform the young men and women into capable Helenic chefs in a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere.

Under Kon’s careful direction, the courtyard was taken over by our emerging chefs, together with sagankaki, ricotta, feta, olives, and pastry as 12 stunning Greek dishes were created. Haloumi was passionately torn, pizzas were rolled and Spanakopita were delicately stuffed. The Greek goddess of Harvest, Demeter, would’ve gladly dined on the results.

As the rising chefs basked in their new-found culinary skills and satisfied tummies, they were taken away by the evocative voice of Kyle Taylor (singer/songwriter & pianist). The feast and festivities did not end until well past midnight when our gorged apprentices rolled out of the premises.

Our sincere thanks go to Kon for lending his faultless enthusiasm, patience and direction to another great Ondru event. Another gastronomical success. May we suggest “Kon’s Kitchen” for a prospective ABC series?
