Synopsis

Synopsis

Passage is a mural about the idea of freedom. It is an artistic expression of the challenges faced in the pursuit of freedom, especially when living a life of uncertainty. The mural was inspired by stories, feelings and thoughts expressed by asylum seekers at the Sanctuary residence of Baptcare, Brunswick, Melbourne.

What is freedom?

These are some thoughts on freedom as expressed by the residents:

"Waiting for freedom – it will never come, open the door, no one will open the door for you. Freedom is when you can open the door for yourself!"

"Freedom is what you make of. How can I be free when you lock me up in a room? Freedom is not possible. Freedom is something I can’t see at the moment! Freedom is something I can’t see!"

"Freedom is privacy, to be left alone."

"Being here in sanctuary is my freedom."

"Freedom is not physical, it’s mental freedom that’s important. Freedom of thought, a free mind. Freedom is when you sleep fearless and wake fearless. Freedom is to be free of burden when you sleep."

"People say freedom, but which freedom?"

"The challenge in life is to seek freedom and keep seeking and fighting for freedom. Today, my freedom is to get out. Tomorrow when I get out, it will be to get a job, then it’s something else. Life is about finding and fighting for your freedom. If we have complete freedom, we might as well be dead. Essence of life is to find your freedom."

"Some people find their freedom from singing, some from dancing, some from having a big house. For me freedom equals equality."

"Water gives me a sense of freedom. 70% of earth’s surface is water, 60% of human body is water. Water can dissolve the hardest but yet so yielding to make large things float. I feel free from jumping into water, the feeling that comes from it. The way the body falls into water, the feeling."

"New creation is part of creating freedom."

"Freedom is hope. It's not our fault that we are in this situation or where we were born. Life has abandoned us."

"The pursuit of happiness, the pursuit of happiness goes on."

"To find life, we must find freedom."
